Italy Celebrates Golden Year in Volleyball with Men’s and Women’s World Titles

Rome — Italian volleyball is basking in glory after both the men’s and women’s national teams captured world championship titles in 2025, delivering one of the most successful years in the sport’s history for the country.
Men’s Triumph in the Philippines
The men’s team secured its fifth world crown with a 3–1 victory over Bulgaria in Pasay City, Philippines. The match showcased Italy’s depth and dominance, with set scores of 25-21, 25-17, 17-25, 25-10.
Yuri Romano starred with 22 points, while Mattia Bottolo contributed 19. Rising star Alessandro Michieletto, who was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, provided the spark that kept Italy steady through tense moments. The triumph was set up by a semifinal win over top-ranked Poland, one of the tournament’s defining upsets.
Women’s Victory in Bangkok
Italy’s women also stood at the top of the podium, edging Türkiye in a dramatic five-set final in Bangkok. The scoreboard reflected the intensity of the contest: 25-23, 13-25, 26-24, 19-25, 15-8.
This marked only the second women’s world championship in Italy’s history and the first since 2002. Star opposite Paola Egonu drove the team with 22 points, while Myriam Sylla added 19. Setter Alessia Orro, whose precise distribution of play was critical, was named MVP of the tournament.
The women’s victory added to their Volleyball Nations League title earlier in the year, underscoring a dominant campaign.
Significance of the Double Success
The simultaneous triumphs are historic: never before have both Italian teams held world titles at the same time. For fans and athletes alike, it represents a pinnacle moment, the culmination of years of investment in youth development and elite competition.
The victories are expected to energize the sport at home, from grassroots levels to professional leagues, while boosting Italy’s profile as a powerhouse in international volleyball.
